For aircraft maintenance personnel, On-The-Job-Training (OJT) is the aircraft maintenance experience gained by the Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) in the workplace.


The objective of OJT is to gain the required competence and experience in performing safe maintenance.

OJT is usually delivered peer-to-peer and shall take place on the aircraft, or aeronautical product, at the workplace involving actual work task performance.

OJT may include both line and base maintenance tasks and must comply with the requirements of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

Self-esteem, high yield, and professionalism are always high in those organisations that employ a logical and reasonable on-the-job training program.


OJT is one of the most outstanding training methods because it is planned, organised, and conducted at the employee’s workplace.

On-the-job training is usually the principal method used for augmenting employee skills and escalating output and efficiency.

It is an acceptable method for developing expertise distinctive to an employee’s job particularly for aircraft maintenance engineers.

OJT can be used by aircraft engineers to acquire practical competence in the tasks they need to perform.
